My mom keeps telling me I should adore and be thankful to the virgin Mary, I've told my mom that we shouldn't adore something or someone that is not God, but she tells me that this is like an exception because she is the mother of God (note: parents are catholic and I've decided to be a christian)

Show your mom the ten commandments. (Emphasize on 1 & 2)

In past times, the priest was the only one allowed to come close to God. The reason that Jesus died on the cross was so that we all could come to God.  

1 Timothy 2:5: 

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.

Here are a couple of sites that tell you who Mary is. When you read the bible, you will see that God mentions several gods continuously (including in the Old Testament). Here are several verses that refer to the false gods, and how God was angered. Read and then discuss with your mom.
