In the bible angels have different important tasks that go from being messengers, to carrying/playing instruments, to worshiping God etc. but the main purpose angels were created was and is to worship God.
I don’t believe that we have guardian angels, but I do believe that God can send angels to protect us, but it is God who is controlling all. &We must never, ever pray to a created being, asking a guardian angel to protect us would be praying to them for help and not God. &We must also never worship an angel.
“At this I fell at (the angels) feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” - Revelation 19:10

You’re right, angels do have free will. Jude 1:6, and 2 Peter 2:4 are good references. We will judge angels, 1 Cor 6:3.
Angels do fight/defend. We have guardian angels that help defend us, such as Psalm 91:11
